Thanks so much to those Progressive Democrats of NC members who helped make our Earth Day Call to Conscience rally and march in Charlotte a huge success! With more than 300 people there and 44 of us peacefully arrested for civil disobedience, Duke Energy's CEO, Jim Rogers, has heard our call to stop global climate change and mountaintop removal by supporting increased energy efficiency and deploying renewable electricity. The first step in meeting this goal is for Mr. Rogers to cancel his plans to construct an 800-megawatt coal-fired power plant fifty miles west of Charlotte.

Unfortunately, Mr. Rogers' recent appearance on CBS's 60 Minutes
(http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4969902n) makes it all-too-clear that we
still have some work to do in convincing him to break his ties to the coaligarchy
(shorthand for the socially oppressive, environmentally destructive industries,
apathetic shareholders and complicit government officials that bring us
coal-generated electricity). As you know, the coaligarchy leaves a wake of human
misery and environmental devastation wherever coal is extracted, processed,
transported, incinerated and disposed of as air pollution and poisonous
post-combustion waste. Jim Rogers' new power plant is no exception. We will
continue our Call to Conscience on May 7th in Charlotte.

During its fifty-year lifespan, Mr. Rogers' new plant, commonly known as
"Cliffside," will burn more coal removed by decapitating mountains and dumping the
tops into nearby valleys and streams. The practice has permanently erased 470 peaks
from the Appalachian skyline and buried or polluted nearly 2,000 miles of streams.
Additionally, Jim Rogers will foul Tar Heel skies and the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park by belching out oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, mercury and other
toxic pollutants. Moreover, by pumping the global warming equivalent of one million
cars into the air each year, Jim Rogers will ravage the North Carolina coastline by
increasing sea levels; thereby destroying people's property.

But Jim Rogers is not the only person at Duke Energy with the power to cancel
Cliffside. By "voting" with their dollars, Duke's shareholders have the
power--indeed the responsibility--to cancel Cliffside by calling on Jim Rogers to
join the Call to Conscience during their annual meeting in Charlotte. Please join us
at the shareholders' meeting by convening at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday May 7, at Duke
Headquarters (526 South Church Street).
